All parents want their children to be healthy. To that end, most parents are diligent about making sure their family receives good nutrition and regular checkups for their teeth, hearing, and vision.
Yet, most overlook the importance of having their children visit a chiropractor. Regular visits to a chiropractor for children are important because the spine protects the central control system for the body – the nervous system. Within the spine are billions of nerve fibers that send messages and energy to every part of the body giving in formation on how to function, thrive and heal.
This, in turn, can lead to a variety of health problems including:
- Weak immune system
- Organ malfunction
- Scoliosis
- Headaches, back aches, neck pain
- Weak immune system
- Allergies
- Hyperactivity
Vertebral subluxations have many possible causes, some of which may occur just by experiencing the birth process. Injuries can occur to a baby's spine at birth simply by the twisting and pulling on the baby's head. Health problems in childhood and even in adults have often been traced to spinal damage at birth that was never treated.
But children are also vulnerable to vertebral subluxations as they grow. Here are a couple examples:
- In toddlers, spinal misalignments caused as a result of falling while learning to walk can be helped through chiropractic care. Left untreated, bumps caused from falls by toddlers can lead to spinal deformities later in life and may also increase the potential for scoliosis and a weakened immune system
- As they age, the need for chiropractic care is even more crucial among children involved with contact sports. This is because these activities can cause spinal injuries that interfere with proper growth during rapid stages of physical development
- Hyperactivity
- Autism
- Scoliosis
- Aches and pains
- Ear infections
- Asthma
- Allergies
- Eczema
Both children and adults can have subluxations without showing signs of any symptoms. But there are warning signs to look for that may indicate the spinal column is out of alignment:
- Fatigue
- Shoulder blades flared out
- Hyperactivity
- Frequent falling
- Irritability
- Joint aches
- One arm or leg that appears to look shorter than the other
- A foot that is turned in or out
As with any treatment, chiropractic adjusting techniques are also modified based on an individual's size, weight, and unique spinal problems. Recommended treatments may include specific spinal adjustments, recommendations on exercise, nutritional advice or other conservative methods of care based on health history, age, and lifestyle.
